OBITUARY
LUNA ISACC MISHOE, son of the late Henry and Martha Oliver Mishoe, was born in Bucksport, South Carolina, January 5, 1917. He peacefully died at home January 16, 1989.
Luna attended elementary and high school in Marion, South Carolina. It was discovered early in his life, that Luna had a special talent and interest in science and math. He completed the Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Chemistry at Allen University (1938), the Master of Science Degree in Mathematics and Physics at the University of Michigan (1942), the Doctor of Philosophy Degree at New York University (1953), Post-Doctoral research in Mathematics at Oxford University in London, England (1955-1956), the Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and Business Administration at Delaware State College (1981), and the M.B.A degree from the Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania (1985).
While concurrently serving in the U.S. Air Force and attending the University of Michigan, he met his lovely wife, the former Hattie Bernice Dabney, whom he married on February 18, 1944. From this union, three daughters and one son were born.
Luna’s professional career began with his employment as professor of Mathematics and Physics at Kittrell College, North Carolina from 1939 – 1942. From 1946-48 he served as professor of Math and Physics at Delaware State College. In 1948, Luna began a twelve-year tenure at Morgan State College (University), advancing to the position of full-professor and chairman of the Division of Natural Sciences. During this same time Luna was special consultant for the Ballistics Research Laboratory at the U.S. Army Ordinance Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland.
October 20, 1960 began a new era as Luna returned to Delaware and assumed the presidency of Delaware State College. With purpose, perseverance, courage and vigor, he guided the destiny of Delaware State College for twenty-seven years. His tenure spanned a period of enormous social change – the Camelot days of the early 60’s the protests and campus unrest of the late 60’s and early 70s, and the decline in enrollment in the early 80s.
Despite these events, which had a tremendous impact on higher education throughout the country, the growth of and development of Delaware State College during Dr. Mishoe’s tenure was phenomenal. The administration of Dr. Luna Isaac Mishoe, as president of Delaware State College, officially ended with his retirement on June 30, 1987.
While planning for his retirement from Delaware State, Dr. Mishoe and his family established Mishoe Towers, an apartment building for handicapped and senior citizens. It was his dream to have a family business which would enhance the Dover Community.
